Position Summary
The person in this role works closely with faculty, staff, students, vendors, and other university constituents to support reliable technology-enabled learning environments. The position contributes to classroom technology deployments, equipment refresh initiatives, advanced documentation, inventory management, user support materials, and operational improvements that support instructional and media technology services.
The Classroom and Media Technologist II provides advanced technical support, training, and assistance for classroom, media, and collaboration technologies used throughout the university’s instructional, meeting, and event spaces. This position installs, configures, supports, maintains, and troubleshoots basic and advanced media equipment and systems; responds to service requests and incidents; resolves escalated issues; and coordinates with internal and external providers when additional support is required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Installs, configures, supports, and maintains basic and advanced classroom, media, and collaboration technologies to ensure functional and reliable learning and similarly enhanced spaces.
- Proactively conducts routine system diagnostics and preventative maintenance activities to ensure equipment and systems are functioning as designed and intended.
- Responds to incidents and service requests so that non-functioning equipment and systems are rapidly restored to full functionality.
- Resolves escalated incidents involving classroom technology, presentation systems, video conferencing technologies, lecture capture systems, control systems, and related peripheral equipment.
- Escalates or refers unresolved incidents to appropriate internal teams, vendors, or external service providers.
- Provides guidance to other media technologists when troubleshooting more complex classroom and media technology issues.
- Ensures mobile technologies and temporary equipment setups are deployed when and where requested.
- Instructs faculty, students, staff, and other users in the operation and use of classroom and media technologies to enhance proficiency and confidence in technology-enhanced learning environments.
- Provides one-on-one assistance and just-in-time support for instructors and presenters experiencing technology-related issues.
- Develops and maintains user guides, training materials, and support resources used in classroom and media-enhanced spaces.
- Assists with training delivery approaches used by media technologists and student employees.
- Provides customer-focused support for instructional, academic, administrative, and event-related technology needs.
- May provide direction, guidance, or task coordination for student employees or other temporary support staff.
- Participates in conferences, webinars, training sessions, certification courses, and professional development opportunities to maintain technical knowledge and skills.
- Develops and maintains advanced technical procedures to ensure consistent application of support and operational practices.
- Documents and reports incidents, requests, resolutions, and outcomes in support of service management and shared knowledge resources.
- Verifies the accuracy of technical documentation to support efficient operations and service delivery.
- Reviews technical documentation regularly to keep procedures current and aligned with classroom and media technology changes.
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of system documentation, room documentation, equipment records, wiring diagrams, and related support materials.
- Documents the location, status, configuration, and history of technology assets to maintain accurate inventory records.
- Reviews new equipment inventory registration, testing results, and deployment readiness.
- Assists with inventory audits, equipment replacement activities, warranty/repair tracking, and surplus processing.
- Participates in classroom technology refresh initiatives, equipment replacement efforts, and technology deployment projects.
- Assists with evaluating, testing, and validating new technologies, equipment, and software prior to implementation.
- Supports classroom upgrades, technology enhancements, new installations, and post-installation verification activities.
- Assists with equipment staging, configuration, deployment, testing, and acceptance activities.
- Works collaboratively with other IT staff, vendors, facilities personnel, and campus stakeholders to support project objectives.
- Identifies additional resource needs and assists with coordinating appropriate support to maintain service availability and capacity.
- Performs basic equipment service and troubleshooting to support classroom and media technology operations.
- Participates in repair coordination, vendor service processes, and equipment replacement recommendations.
- Maintains service records, shipping documentation, and repair information for third-party repairs or replacements.
- Recommends service or replacement strategies to senior staff when equipment cannot be reliably restored.
- Participates in departmental meetings, committees, and workgroups as assigned.
- Maintains awareness of emerging instructional and media technologies, support practices, and industry trends.
- May act as a subject matter resource for selected classroom and media technologies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Any one or any combination totaling one (1) year (12 months) from the following categories:
- College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
- College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- Work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.
- Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position may be required.
