We’re expanding our engineering capabilities around cloud-native geospatial platforms and Earth Observation (EO) services.
We are looking for a Geospatial Platform Engineer to help design, develop and operate scalable software systems that enable discovery, access, processing and integration of geospatial and EO data across cloud and hybrid environments.
Within the \"Chief Technological Innovation Office\" organizational unit at the Rome office we are looking for a resource to cover the position of Geospatial Platform Engineer.
This role contributes to the development of APIs, data services, geospatial catalogues and user-facing applications, while supporting the deployment and operation of services on modern cloud-native infrastructure.
You will work closely with senior architects, software engineers, scientists and external partners to translate business and technical requirements into reliable, interoperable and production-ready solutions.
You will join a multidisciplinary engineering team and progressively take ownership of platform components, architecture decisions and integration activities as your experience grows.
This is an early-career position with a clear growth path toward technical ownership of geospatial platform architecture and cloud-native service development.
What you'll do
- Support activites of the Commercial User Terminal (CUT) as an operational platform for EO acquisition planning, Ground Segment interfaces, status management and decision traceability.
- Evolve and integrate existing platforms such as SEon SE, AWARE, Map Cy, Agri Geo, br AInt and CUT within the modular GIC architecture.
- Develop reusable platform services, APIs and integration components while preserving each product’s domain-specific capabilities.

- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing processes and software delivery workflows.
- Troubleshoot performance, configuration and integration issues across platform components with support from senior team members.
- Collaborate with internal teams and technical suppliers on integration activities, technical reviews and delivery milestones.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation, software design specifications, requirements analyses and operational procedures.
- Stay informed about emerging technologies and best practices in cloud-native geospatial platforms, workflow orchestration and AI-enabled automation.
Skills
- Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Geoinformatics or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Up to 5 years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, geospatial applications or related technical fields.
- Strong software development skills, preferably in Python.
- Understanding of modern web application and API architectures, including REST APIs, authentication mechanisms and basic microservice patterns.
- Working knowledge of at least one cloud platform such as AWS or Azure.
- Familiarity with container technologies and Kubernetes-based deployments.
- Understanding of software configuration management, version control and collaborative development practices.
- Familiarity with Dev Ops principles and development toolchains, including Git Lab, Git Lab CI/CD and Atlassian products.
- Ability to analyse technical challenges, investigate issues methodically and contribute to effective solutions.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, architects, scientists and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated willingness to learn rapidly and progressively take ownership of technical responsibilities.
- Good written and spoken English.
- Nice to have
- Familiarity with Earth Observation, remote sensing or geospatial data management.
- Experience working with STAC, OGC APIs, COG, Zarr, Rasterio, GDAL, Xarray or related geospatial technologies.
